Blue Collar is the continuation of Spectrum Skateboards started over a decade ago. With emphasis on original design, sardonic humor, experimental concepts and DIY production, Blue Collar is one of the most grounded and versatile independent skate companies around.
Now in it's third year, BCS is hitting it's stride and finding it's niche. Taking a step back from the pretentiousness of the boutique, blue collar blends classic worker's clothing with subtle yet solid and defined design. The result is items which will be just as appropriate and relevant a decade from now as today.
Originally started in 2002 as spectrum skateboards, blue collar has it's roots planted deep. Spectrum was a first step towards the DIY spirit that guides BCS. It however was not enough. Faced with increasing costs and lack of funds, Spectrum was shuttered eventually and laid by the wayside.
What makes contemporary BCS so different is a decade of experience and production potentials. The result is blue collar can make nearly everything onsite, decreasing costs and increasing creative freedoms. The fact is you would be hard pressed to find a skate company anywhere which manufactures so many of it's own products in house.
Blue Collar possesses a comprehensive means of production including textile and graphic screen printing, cut and sew capabilities, die cutting of stickers fabrics and other materials, full color signs and banners, unique packaging and graphic design. In addition, BCS prints their own decks using screen printing technologies (some created by us), hand painting, and heat transfer graphics (and sometimes all three together).
Every thing bcs makes was hand printed at the bare minimum and we go out of our way to ensure that fact. In some cases, printing ends up taking more time and being costlier than if we had it done through a middleman, but we stay true to our DIY sensibilities and print the stuff ourselves anyway. This is how we do things here. We prefer the creative freedom of not having to conform to some other screen printers norms. Having such comprehensive capabilities sometimes leads to new and exciting methods that only a unique factory like ours could have come up with.
Blue Collar's mission is to promote skateboarding in all shapes and forms. Blue Collar's intentions are to push for more municipal skateparks and actively create DIY underground spots. In addition, BCS hopes to promulgate skateboarding in the atypical populations by sharing, fostering and rekindling the love of skateboarding to all ages/genders.
To achieve this goal, blue collar is always participating in the skate community. We sponsor riders, contests and giveaways. We assist non profit companies, especially those geared towards skateboarding, with merch such as shirts, stickers, banners, etc. completely free of charge in most cases. We feel this community can benefit from such acts and such a community will expand and grow into something much greater.
The Future of BCS
Blue Collar continues on into the future with no real regard for anything aside from expression, creation and of course skateboarding. We are playing the long game; we're here to stay and we're making progress everyday. Whether it's working with killer artists, sending out sticker packs all over this U.S. of A. or making sardonic satirically edgey posts, we will persevere and conquer the hearts and minds of the skaters everywhere.
Since our main goal is to help promulgate a strong skateboarding community, we are free from the burdens of over the top monetary ambitions and stressful all or nothing scenarios. We're not here to drive ferraris and sport conspicuous consumer goods. Our goal is to break even while pushing the limits of the skate culture and hopefully nudging it into a path that will be beneficial to all. This allows for an unprecedented amount of freedom going forward.
